How reserving works

Simple, personal, and in the order reservations arrive.

1

Apply or call

Start the adoption application, or just call Billie — she's happy to answer every question over the phone first.

2

Reserve with $500

A $500 reservation fee holds your place in line. If your preference isn't in this litter, it rolls to a future litter of your choice.

3

Visit, then gotcha day

Meet your puppy at 5–6 weeks. Puppies go home at 8 weeks — this litter goes home September 17.

Day 49 · the science of a good match

Every puppy is temperament tested

At exactly seven weeks old, every Tillery puppy is evaluated using the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test — the breeder standard for understanding who a puppy really is before they go home.

Why 49 days?

Seven weeks is the sweet spot. By day 49 a puppy is neurologically complete — as Wendy Volhard puts it, the puppy has the brain of an adult dog — but hasn't yet been shaped by life experience. Test earlier and the results aren't reliable; test later and you're measuring training, not temperament.

It's a narrow window, and it's the reason we test every single litter on the same schedule rather than when it's convenient.

What it means for your family

Puppies are scored from 1 to 6 across ten areas — and there are no winners or losers. A confident, driven puppy who'd thrive with an experienced handler is a poor fit for a quiet retirement home, and the gentlest puppy in the litter may not be the one for a household of active kids.

That's the whole point: the scores show which puppy belongs with which family. It's why Billie asks about your home, your schedule and your experience on the application — and why, when it's time to choose, you'll have every puppy's results in front of you.

The ten areas we score

  1. Social attraction — confidence and interest in people
  2. Following — willingness to stay with their person
  3. Restraint — how they handle being gently held
  4. Social dominance — response to being petted and led
  5. Elevation — trust when they have no control
  6. Retrieving — willingness to work with you (a strong predictor of trainability)
  7. Touch sensitivity — how much pressure they feel
  8. Sound sensitivity — reaction to sudden noise
  9. Sight sensitivity — response to movement
  10. Stability — recovery from a startle

Results are shared with your family during puppy selection to help you make your final decision — and a printed copy goes home in your puppy's folder.
